As you recall, we put every issue of the first ten volumes of our magazine- first known as "Seaways" and subsequently as "Seaways Ships in Scale"- on a double-CD set in 2001. The set covers everything from Volume I, Number 1 in January-February, 1990 through Volume X, Number 6 of November-December, 1999. That?s fifty-nine complete issues (there was no May-June 1990 issue), with every cover and every page, each reproduced in the original order. That's what we mean by an "archival" reproduction. The original run quickly sold out, so we printed another, which also sold out. Orders were slowing down a lot, so we decided not to do a third run, but the response to our custom burned scratch-building course on CD has been so good that we thought we would try that in place of a very expensive third print run.
This means that you can find that old research article you were looking for on the Constellation, check out the plans of the Lady Washington replica, take the complete "College of Nautical Knowledge" course and scratch-build the Bermuda boat Corsair or print out the dozens of shop hints for your own shop binder...the list goes on and on. There are literally hundreds of articles to read, plans to study, book reviews to consider and kit reviews to start the creative juices flowing.
The CD?s are set up magnificently. Designer Paul Mitchell scanned every cover and page and set it all up in HTML (hyper-text markup language) so that it is compatible with all popular Web browsers on either a PC or a Mac. You can select an issue from the cover photos, shown in one year rows, turn the page to the table of contents, choose an article from the TOC and click on it to get to the article, then just page through it or go back to the beginning. We have also included a copy of our Cumulative Index, so you can print out a list of references from each of the two five-year collections, using any keyword, name, date, writer or topic you?d like. The custom sets also have a self-start program built in. Very easy to use!
The Web e-mail list/chat group is still available for folks to discuss the features of the set with the designer. To join, just follow the simple directions on the Web page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SISCD. Then, if you have any questions about the content, function or features of the CD?s, just fire off a question to Paul.
Most of the issues reproduced here have long since been out of print. If we still had them, all fifty-nine would set you back $442.25 (post-paid, of course!). For orders to Canada an additional $2 will be added and for all other orders outside the US an additonal $5 will be added.
